Italia: San Vito Lo Capo

In questo blog vi racconto delle meraviglie del Giappone. Ho deciso però di fare un’eccezione per mostrarvi un po’ della nostra bella Italia. Come vi raccontavo qui, io e Antonio siamo tornati in Italia per trascorrere le vacanze estive con le nostre famiglie. Le nostre mete: San Vito Lo Capo, in Sicilia, e Vieste, in Puglia.

In this blog I usually talk about the wonders of Japan. However I decided to make an exception to show you two corners of my native country: Italy. As I was mentioning here, myself and Antonio went back to Italy for the summer holidays. We spent one week in San Vito Lo Capo, in Sicily, and one in Vieste, in Puglia.

San Vito Lo Capo si trova in provincia di Trapani, nel Nord Ovest della Sicilia. E’ un comune di circa 4000 abitanti e si sviluppa intorno alla sua famosissima spiaggia di sabbia bianca. Dista un’oretta da Trapani.

San Vito Lo Capo is a small town in the North-Western part of Sicily, located in a valley between the mountains and facing its beautiful white sand beach, which attracts many tourists over the summer. You can get there by car from Trapani or Palermo.

Il mare / The seaside

La strada principale del paese, lungo la quale si trovano la maggior parte delle attività commerciali (negozi, ristoranti, panifici, e le nostre mete abituali, gelaterie & pasticcerie) conduce direttamente alla spiaggia. Qui si possono affittare ombrelloni e lettini, o semplicemente approfittare delle piccole spiagge libere situate tra i vari lidi.

The main street of the town leads directly to the beach. You can either rent a beach umbrella from one of the “lido” (beach clubs) or just get your towel and sunbathe in one of the public sections of the beach. The beach in San Vito Lo Capo is suitable for families, but it can get a bit too crowded over the peak season (July and August).

Se siete alla ricerca di spiagge meno affollate, San Vito Lo Capo offre anche questo, ma avrete bisogno dell’auto. Ecco qualche foto per darvi un’idea dello splendido mare che potete trovare intorno a San Vito Lo Capo: Billeci, l’Isulidda e la spiaggia dell’antica Tonnara del Secco, dove ci hanno anche girato un episodio di Montalbano. Si tratta in tutti i casi di spiagge libere rocciose, quindi armatevi di scarpette da scogli e maschera e boccaglio per dare un’occhiata ai fondali!

If you are looking for less crowded beaches, you can find these near San Vito Lo Capo. I would recommend renting a car and driving to one of the following rocky beaches: Billeci, Isulidda and the ancient Tonnara Del Secco. Since it’s a bit difficult to walk on the rocks, which can at times be slippery, make sure to bring some water shoes and even some snorkeling equipment to admire the beautiful sea floor and the colourful fish.

Una delle attrazioni da non perdere è la Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro, che si trova ad appena 15 minuti di auto da San Vito Lo Capo e comprende 7 kilometri di natura incontaminata e una serie di baie e spiagge splendide. L’ingresso per una giornata costa €5 a persona. La prima piccola spiaggia è facilmente raggiungibile ma anche per questo è la più affollata…diciamo che se non si arriva presto, non si riesce a trovare nemmeno un centimetro quadrato di spiaggia libero. Se vi piace camminare consiglio di avventurarvi fino alla terza / quarta caletta. Vi basterà seguire il sentiero che si snoda all’interno dello Zingaro ed è ricco di vegetazione locale.

One of the must see things is Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve, which is a 15 minutes drive from San Vito Lo Capo and stretches along 7km of coastline. The entry fee for one day is €5 per person. There is a total of 7 bays, which can be reached walking along the inner road. The first one is very crowded, since it’s the easier to reach… let’s say if you don’t get there super early you won’t even find the space to lie down on the beach! If you are up for a walk, I would recommend going up to the third or fourth bay. During your walk, you can also admire the beautiful and unique flora.

Dopo una bella giornata al mare, è il momento di una passeggiata in paese, magari accompagnata da un aperitivo con specialità locali. Due localini che posso consigliare sono il bar Eighteen Hours e la birreria Ni Mia, vicinissimi al lungomare. Da Eighteen Hours abbiamo provato l’aperitivo: olive locali, focaccia, panelle e patate fritte, crostini e ovviamente uno spritz (c’è sia la versione classica che quello con zibibbo e rosmarino). Ni Mia invece si specializza in birre locali, come quelle di Donnadicoppe, con una serie di etichette ispirate alle carte da scopa, o delle birrificio Birra Irias, basata a Messina.

After a day spent at the beach, you can take a stroll in the town main road, and maybe have a classic Italian aperitivo (a drink/light meal that usually takes place at the end of the work day). I can recommend two bars/restaurants in San Vito: Eighteen Hours and Ni Mia. We tried the aperitivo at Eighteen Hours, which was very reach and had a good value for money. You can see what we had in the picture below: olives, focaccia bread, fries and panelle (fried chickpea flour), bruschetta and of course a spritz. The classic spritz is made with Aperol, Prosecco and soda water, and the darker version was a twist on the classi, as it was made with Zibibbo, a local afterdinner liqueur and rosemary. Ni Mia is instead specialized in beers, so you can try lots of Sicilian beers: we tried a couple from the brewery Donnadicoppe and one from Birra Irias, from Messina. Even though the beers were very good, the price of the drinks was quite steep.

Ho altre due istituzioni da consigliarvi se vi trovate a San Vito Lo Capo. La prima è stata la tappa obbligata quasi ogni sera durante il nostro soggiorno: la gelateria Belli Freschi. Gelato e granite buonissime (provate quelle ai gelsi, ai fichi e alle mandorle), porzioni abbondanti e personale veramente eccezionale. Troverete sicuramente la fila a partire dalle 20, ma scorre velocemente quindi non perdetevi d’animo. La seconda è la pasticceria Peralta, dove potrete assaggiare specialità locali come cannoli, cassate, iris (bomboloni ripieni di ricotta e cioccolato) e altro. Sono entrambe nel centro storico, una sulla via principale e l’altra in una traversa andando verso il mare.

I can recommend two more amazing places in San Vito Lo Capo, mostly for desserts. The first one was a place we visit (almost) every night while we stay in San Vito: the gelateria Belli Freschi, where they sell ice-cream and granita. The flavours of both the ice-creams and granita are amazing (try the mulberry, figs or almond granita), the portions are very big and the staff is lovely. You will need to queue up a bit as it’s always super crowded, but it’s really worth the wait.

The second one is the pasticceria Peralta, which makes all of the traditional Sicilian desserts, such as cannoli, cassata, iris (donuts with a ricotta and chocolate filling). Both of these are near the main street and they are open from the around 11 to midnight, so you potentially could have dessert for breakfast, lunch, dinner and after-dinner.
