Un pezzo di Londra a Tokyo, seguito da un pomeriggio nerd.
Checking out the Great British Weekend, a Pokémon pop-up shop and a Final Fantasy art exhibition.
Due volte l’anno c’è un evento a Roppongi Hills dedicato alla Gran Bretagna, dove aziende inglesi possono pubblicizzare i propri prodotti e dove i visitatori possono gustare cibo e bevande tipici e partecipare ad eventi che promuovono la cultura inglese in Giappone.
Non potevamo certo farci sfuggire l’occasione di berci una bella pinta di birra artigianale e di dare un’occhiata a cosa il “Great British Weekend” aveva da offrire, soprattutto dopo aver visto questa serie di video che ci ha fatto venire nostalgia dell’Inghilterra. Armati di ombrello, dati gli acquazzoni che si sono abbattuti su Tokyo la scorsa notte, siamo arrivati fino ad Azabujuban, sulla linea della metro Nanboku, che si trova a circa un quarto d’ora a piedi dallo spazio eventi di Roppongi Hills.
Twice a year there is an event dedicated to Great Britain in Roppongi Hills. Here British companies can showcase their products and visitors can have a taste of British food and traditions. Having lived in London for 6 years and feeling a bit nostalgic thanks to this video series from our favourite Youtubers, we decided to check out what is called “The Great British Weekend”. The weather was also fitting as it rained a lot the day before. We took our umbrella and reached Azabujuban with the Nanboku line.
Appena usciti dalla stazione, ci siamo fermati a scattare qualche fotografia di un carinissimo tempio con una statuina delle sette divinità della fortuna, di cui eravamo andati alla ricerca il giorno del nostro matrimonio al comune di Shibuya.
There is a lovely temple just outside the metro exit and we took some pictures of the decorations outside the main entrance. You might recognise the characters in one of the sculptures: these are the Seven Lucky Gods, which we looked for on the day of our wedding at the Shibuya Town hall.
Dopo una breve passeggiata, con sosta in libreria, siamo arrivati allo spazio eventi di Roppongi Hills, la Roppongi Hills Arena, che si trova accanto alla sede della TV Asahi, famosa per Doraemon. Dalla strada principale si è notato subito il double decker bus, l’autobus a due piani tipico di Londra, e un campetto da rugby allestito per la giornata.
The Roppongi Hills is just 15 minutes walk from Azabujuban station, and there is a bookshop on the way there in case you want to stop by. Since Roppongi Hills is a pretty big complex of buildings, you need to look for Roppongi Hills Arena on Google maps. Or you can just head over to the Asahi TV building, which is just next to the event space. We spotted the double decker bus and the street rugby field, and we knew we had arrived.
Lo sponsor dell’autobus era Ted Baker, la famosa marca di vestiti londinese, che conoscevo già per una serie di eventi organizzati in uno dei cinema in cui ho lavorato a Londra (la location di Baker Street). Al cinema di Baker Street avevano presentato la loro nuova pubblicità sul grande schermo, con popcorn e bibite serviti in confezioni personalizzate con il logo dell’azienda e una serie di modelli e modelle che accoglievano gli ospiti lungo la scalinata all’ingresso del cinema. Al Great British Weekend hanno allestito un’area fotografie all’esterno dell’autobus, mentre hanno trasformato il piano inferiore del double decker in un bar in cui venivano distribuiti ghiaccioli gratis e il piano superiore in una “zona divanetti”.
The sponsor on the bus was Ted Baker, the London fashion brand, which I already knew as they rented out one of the cinemas I worked at for the launch of their new advertisement. At Everyman Baker Street, they took over the whole cinema and they served popcorn and drinks in their branded cups and Chinese boxes. Here at the Great British Weekend, they decorated the area just next to the bus for photoshoots and turned the lower floor of the bus into a bar where they gave out free ice lollies and the top floor into a dining area.
Al Great British Weekend c’erano ovviamente anche bancarelle di cibo e bevande tradizionali inglesi: molte birre artigianali, un carretto interamente dedicato al fish & chips, che è sold out intorno alle 3 del pomeriggio, uno stand di cupcake e altri banchetti con prodotti tipici come sausage rolls, roast beef e vini inglesi. Abbiamo scoperto la birreria Baird Brewing Company, che ha sede a Shizuoka, nella regione di Chūbu, ma ha una serie di bar a Tokyo (Takadanobaba, Nakameguro, Harajuku) – probabilmente ci vedranno presto in uno di questi bar per provare le altre birre che producono.
Food was another big part of the Great British Weekend: lots of craft beers, a food truck entirely dedicated to fish & chips, which sold out around 3pm, a cupcake stand and other stalls with stuff like sausage rolls, roast beef and English wines. I was hoping in a plate of bangers & mash but since it was summer I couldn’t find any. However, we got a nice beer from the Baird Brewing Company, which is based in Shizuoka (in the Chūbu region). They also have taprooms in Tokyo (Takadanobaba, Nakameguro, Harajuku), so we will definitely look for them again in the city.
Siamo rimasti a esplorare Roppongi Hills per un’altra oretta, principalmente perché ci siamo imbattuti nel nuovo negozio temporaneo dei Pokémon, dedicato a Evee, che insieme a Pikachu sarà la protagonista del nuovo videogioco in uscita a Novembre 2018. Il negozio ospita una mostra di illustrazioni ispirate a Evee, con relativo shop per acquistare stampe e articoli di cartoleria con i disegni della mostra e una yogurteria che vende 9 tipi di yogurt gelato, uno per ogni evoluzione di Evee. Siamo stati parecchio fortunati a trovare questo negozio temporaneo, specialmente perché è aperto solo fino al 9 Settembre. Abbiamo assaggiato lo yogurt gelato al sesamo nero, con salsa al sesamo nero e cereali, il tutto per la “modica” cifra di 600 yen (circa €4.60).
We stayed in Roppongi Hills for another hour after we finished checking out the Great British Weekend. That’s where we ran into a new Pokémon pop-up shop, entirely dedicated to Evee, the new main character of the upcoming Pokémon game for Nintendo Switch, which will be out in November. The pop-up shop is made up of an exhibition hall, where different versions of Evee are displayed, a gift shop and a cafe and it will be open only until September 9th. The cafe sells only frozen yogurt, with nine different flavours, one for each of the different Evee. We tried the black sesame version, which represents Umbreon, and has black sesame sauce and corn flakes. The price of one frozen yogurt is “just” 600 yen, which is approximately £4.40.
Per concludere la giornata e non perderci una mostra che sia noi che la nostra amica Chiara volevamo vedere da tempo e che chiudeva domenica 2 Settembre, siamo andati a Ikebukuro, a circa 40 minuti in metro da Roppongi. Ikebukuro è un po’ il centro nerd di Tokyo, secondo solo ad Akihabara. E speravamo di salire su uno dei treni della Marunouchi line decorati con i Pokémon per arrivarci, ma non siamo riusciti a trovarli. La mostra era dedicata a Yoshitaka Amano, illustratore e character designer giapponese, famoso per aver disegnato i logo per i videogiochi della serie Final Fantasy. Mostra molto carina, anche per me che di Final Fantasy ne ho giocato solo uno. Il mio disegno preferito è stato questo con i chocobo, ma c’erano tantissime altre opere interessanti di cui ho messo qualche fotografia.
In the afternoon, we were joined by our friend Chiara at the Yoshitaka Amano exhibition, in Ikebukuro. September 2nd was the last day of this exhibition, so we hopped on the train and 40 minutes later we arrived in Ikebukuro. We were hoping to be lucky enough to ride one of the special edition Pokémon trains of the Marunouchi line, but we didn’t manage to get on one of these. The exhibition was quite interesting, as Yoshitaka Amano is the legendary Japanese illustrator who worked on the logos for the Final Fantasy games. Antonio and Chiara were in awe, as they played lot of these games, and even if I only played one Final Fantasy, I enjoyed the exhibition too. My favourite part were the chocobo drawings, but there were a lot of other interesting artworks.
Tokyo questo weekend ci ha ricordato un po’ la cara Londra, con eventi e mostre particolari e con la vitalità che le grandi metropoli possono avere. E ci ha aggiunto quel tocco nerd che solo il Giappone può avere, con persone in cosplay lungo le vie di Ikebukuro e una gelateria con nove gusti che rappresentano nove Pokémon diversi.
Tokyo this weekend reminded us of our dear London, with the cultural events and the vibe that big world capitals have. And it added that nerd touch that only Japan has, where you run into cosplayers in the main streets and you find out about pop-up shops that serve Pokémon themed frozen yogurt.
Not the usual tourists
