Dopo il tramonto New Orleans è si trasforma nella sorella minore di Las Vegas. C’è intrattenimento di tutti i tipi: dal bar sofisticato al locale con musica jazz dal vivo, fino ad arrivare agli strip club (per lui e per lei) e club con DJ set.
Se volete vedere l’anima più festaiola di New Orleans non potete che cominciare da Bourbon Street: è una lunga strada pedonale nel Quartiere Francese che si estende per 13 isolati e che ospita alcuni dei locali storici della città, oltre che moltissimi bar e club. Ad esempio Oscar Wilde e Mark Twain andavano spesso nella Old Absinthe House, mentre Ernest Hemingway era un frequentatore dell’Hotel Monteleone. Qui potete trovare un articolo interessante sui locali storici di Bourbon Street. Il nome della strada omaggia la casata dei Borboni (da cui prende il nome anche il famoso liquore!).
After the sunset New Orleans transforms into Las Vegas’ little sister. You can find any type of entertainment: from the classy whisky bar to the club with live jazz music, from the strip club (for him and for her) to clubs with techno music.
If you want to experience this side of New Orleans, you just need to head off to Bourbon Street: it’s a long street that goes across 13 blocks and it is closed to car traffic. Bourbon Street is the home of some of the historic sites of the city, such as the Old Absinthe House where Oscar Wilde or Mark Twain used to hang out in or Hotel Monteleone, where Ernest Hemingway used to sip a cocktail (or two). You can find some information on the historic sites here. The street was named after the Bourbon House, not the liqueur, though.

Here are some suggestions on what to do in Bourbon Street, based on our personal experience:
Provate un Hurricane da Pat O’Brien, il locale in cui è stato inventato questo cocktail, gustato nel cortile interno con vista fontana infuocata. L’Hurricane prende il nome dal bicchiere in cui è servito, decorato con tanto di arancia e ciliegina. E’ un cocktail abbastanza forte e molto dolce, simile a una granita alcolica.
Try a Hurricane at Pat O’ Brien, the bar that introduced this cocktail. There is a big garden with a flaming fountain at the center (yes we wanted to put our name in it as if we were at the Triwizard Tournament!). The cocktail takes its name from the glass it is served in, decorated with a cherry and a slice of orange. It’s a very strong and extremely sweet cocktail, similar to a slushie.
Assaggiate la cucina Creola: gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp creole, po-boy. C’è un ottimo menu con assaggini di molti piatti tipici da Gumbo Shop (630 Saint Peter Street), a due passi da Bourbon Street. Il Gumbo è piatto povero della tradizione della Louisiana, e ogni famiglia ha una sua ricetta particolare. Il Gumbo tipico di New Orleans è una zuppa di gamberi e salsicce, arricchita con del riso. Quello del Gumbo Shop non è particolarmente piccante, ma in genere il gumbo è molto speziato.
Taste the Creole cuisine: gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp creole, po-boy. You can order a Creole cuisine taster menu at Gumbo Shop, very close to Bourbon Street. Gumbo is a thick stew-like soup made with meat, shrimp and rice. Every family has its own gumbo recipe and the New Orleans’ style one has prawns, sausage and rice. It’s usually spicy but the one at Gumbo Shop was quite mild so I was able to enjoy it.
E già che siamo in tema cibo, vi consigliamo le ostriche di ACME Oyster Bar (724 Iberville Street). Noi abbiamo fatto l’errore di ordinare le ostriche grigliate, che purtroppo erano condite con del formaggio (quando l’ho raccontato a mio padre il suo commento è stato: “Assassini!”), ma abbiamo provato le ostriche fritte ordinate dal nostro amico ed erano deliziose! Una cosa particolare da provare è lo shot all’ostrica, praticamente un bicchierino di vodka con un’ostrica – Antonio non ha molto gradito ma è una cosa divertente da fare!
Since we are talking about food, we can also recommend the Oysters at ACME Oyster Bar. We didn’t enjoy what we ordered that much, grilled oysters with cheese on top (when I told my dad about they cheese on oysters he reacted saying: “Murderers!”), but we tried the fried oysters our friend had and they were delicious! One unique thing you can find at Gumbo Shop is the vodka & oyster shooter – Antonio didn’t really like it and I wasn’t brave enough to try it but it’s something to have if you are feeling adventurous.
La pecca di Bourbon Street: l’odore. Non vi sto a raccontare i dettagli, ma Bourbon Street ha un problema causato dai turisti che bevono troppo.
The worst thing about Bourbon Street: the smell. I am not going to go into detail but Bourbon Street has a problem caused by drunk tourists.
Se non volete distruggervi il fegato come la maggior parte dei visitatori di Bourbon Street, vi consigliamo Frenchmen Street, che è la zona dedicata ai concerti e musica dal vivo. Nella maggior parte dei locali non si paga l’ingresso, ma c’è una consumazione al bar obbligatoria a testa. Noi siamo stati un’oretta da Fritzel’s European Jazz Pub, che in realtà è sempre su Bourbon Street, ad ascoltare Kevin Clark & Collin Myers…davvero bravi!
If didn’t come to New Orleans to drink until you pass out as the majority of Bourbon Street’s visitors, we recommend checking our Frenchmen Street. This is where all the live music action is going on. The entry to the majority of the bars with live music is free, but you would need to order one drink each. We spent more than an hour at Fritzel’s European Jazz Pub, which is still on Bourbon Street, listening to the very talented Kevin Clark & Collin Myers.
