Il motto della città di Austin è “Keep Austin Weird”, che tradotto significa “manteniamola strana, particolare, diversa”. Per capire meglio quanto strana sia Austin, basta farsi un giro a South Congress Avenue, una delle vie principali della città, in cui si possono trovare negozi vintage, bar, ristoranti e food truck. Ecco un paio di negozi da visitare se vi trovate in zona.
Austin’s motto is “Keep Austin Weird”, and you can certainly understand why Austin is weird by taking a stroll on South Congress Avenue. There are plenty of vintage shops, bars, restaurants and food trucks. Here are a few we would recommend visiting.
Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds
Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds è un negozio di maschere e costumi, in cui si può trovare davvero di tutto, da maschere, parrucche, occhiali, vestiti d’epoca, scarpe, accessori per realizzare costumi davvero assurdi!
Appena entrati si viene accolti da un corridoio con boa di struzzo di tutti i colori e si iniziano a scorgere file e file di vestiti. Tutti i vestiti si possono acquistare o noleggiare. Ecco un paio di foto dell’interno del negozio.
Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds is a costume shops where you can find masks, wigs, make up, hats, jewellery and accessories. As soon as you enter the shop, you are welcomed by a stand of colourful feather boas, and you can see rows and rows of costumes, which you can either buy or rent. Here are some pictures of the shop.

Big Top – Candy Shop & Soda Fountain
Big Top è una tappa obbligatoria per i golosi che visitano Austin. Il negozio è decorato in tema “circo” e ha scaffali pieni di caramelle e dolciumi per tutti i gusti: Cotton Candy, orsetti gommosi, lecca lecca, Jelly Beans, tavolette di cioccolato, fino ad arrivare addirittura a caramelle al gusto formica o grillo (una lastra di zucchero con dentro degli insetti – se siete curiosi potete anche comprarli su Amazon). In un angolo c’è anche un distributore di sigarette antico che distribuisce pacchetti di gomme da masticare a forma di sigarette.
Noi siamo usciti dal negozio con una quindicina di Salt water taffy di gusti diversi… ho sempre voluto provarli dopo aver visto questa scena di Friends.
Big Top is a must see shop for all of the candy lovers. This is a circus themed shop and has shelves packed with old school American and international candies: Cotton Candy, gummy bears, lollipops, Twizzlers, Jelly beans, chocolate bars, and you can even find Ant or cricket candies (you can even buy these from Amazon if you are interested!). There is a soda fountain and a vendor cigarette machine that dispenses cigarette candies. We bought quite a few Salt Water taffy of different flavours…I always wanted to try them because of this Friends scene.

Here are a few more snaps of the day, so many interesting shops on South Congress Avenue! You can also have a break/lunch at Jo’s Coffee which serves breakfast tacos and one of the best coffees in Austin. After the break, you can continue your walk until Congress Avenue Bridge, which crosses Lady Bird lake and leads to downtown Austin.
