Prime impressioni – Austin, TX

Siamo arrivati a Austin, TX dopo un volo di 12 ore da Tokyo Narita il 26 Gennaio. Austin è la capitale del Texas, è famosa per il suo buon cibo, per essere una delle città più amichevoli degli Stati Uniti e per essere la “Capitale Mondiale della Musica dal Vivo”.

Per muoversi a Austin è necessaria l’auto, quindi appena atterrati siamo passati a ritirare la nostra bella macchinina all’aeroporto Bergstrom. Sarà la nostra compagna di viaggio per i prossimi 3 mesi.

We arrived in Austin, TX, after a 12 hour flight from Tokyo Narita on January 26th. Austin is the capital of Texas, it’s famous for its great food, for being one of the friendliest cities in the U.S. and for being “The Live Music Capital of the World”.

You need to have a car to get around in Austin, so we went to get our car as soon as we landed at Bergstrom airport. She will be our companion for the next 3 months. 

Non avendo mai guidato auto con il cambio automatico (e non avendo internet appena arrivati per cercare un tutorial su Youtube), ci siamo ritrovati un po’ spiazzati quando ci hanno consegnato l’auto…tanto da dover chiedere aiuto a uno dei parcheggiatori che ci ha spiegato come si fa a entrare nelle varie modalità di guida. Prima di salutarci, ci ha acceso la radio dicendoci: “Ecco una bella stazione di musica country, buon viaggio ragazzi!”

Since we have never driven an automatic car before (and since we didn’t have internet to google a youtube video about it), we had a bit of trouble when we first got in the car…so much that we had to ask for help to one of the valets of the parking. He showed us how everything worked, then he turned on the radio and said: “Off you go, here is some country music for the road!”.

Avevamo sentito che le distanze, gli spazi sono più grandi in America, ma in Texas tutto è ancora più grande dello standard americano. Ce ne accorgiamo appena ci immettiamo nella strada a scorrimento veloce per arrivare al nostro appartamento, la Route 183. Le corsie sono molto larghe rispetto all’Italia, e a ragion veduta perché la maggior parte della auto sono pick-up o SUV. In confronto la nostra Nissan è un moscerino!

Anche il nostro appartamento è sovradimensionato rispetto ai nostri standard, soprattutto considerando la nostra piccola casetta di Londra. Abitiamo in un complesso residenziale a nord di Austin (a circa mezz’ora di auto dal centro), in un appartamento con ampio salotto, cucina open space e stanza da letto con gli armadi a muro.

We did hear that the distances and the things in general are bigger in America, however Texas size is even bigger than the American size. We realise this as soon as we get on the road to go to our apartment, Route 183. The lanes are way bigger than the ones in Italy or in the UK, and this is because the size of the cars is bigger than the ones in Italy or UK. The majority of cars are heavy duty trucks or SUVs, so our car looks very small compared to them. Even our apartment is bigger for our standard, especially if you have been in our London apartment. We are currently living in a residential complex north of Austin (around 30 minutes by car to the centre of the city), in an apartment with a wide living room, open space kitchen and a large bedroom with built-in cupboards.

Per il momento abbiamo visto poco della città, perché il clima non è stato dalla nostra parte. Ci siamo resi conto che qui le temperature variano tantissimo…una domenica sole e 24°, la domenica successiva nuvole e -2°. Siamo stati a visitare un graffiti park chiamato HOPE outdoor gallery, dove chiunque può lasciare il segno e da cui si ha una bella vista su Austin, e il Texas State Capitol, la sede del governo del Texas.

We haven’t seen much of the city, as the weather has been a bit bad lately. Here the temperature has gone from 24° one week, to -2° on the following week. What we’ve seen in Austin is a graffiti park called HOPE outdoor gallery, where you can leave your own mark and where you have a good view of Austin. We also visited the Texas State Capitol, the which contains the office and the chambers of the Texas legislature.

Stiamo anche iniziando ad apprezzare la cucina texana, anche se cerchiamo di mangiare fuori solo una volta a settimana…le specialità locali non sono esattamente salutari!

Per il momento abbiamo provato il barbecue del famoso Salt Lick BBQ, a sud della città, e il pollo fritto di Gus’ World Famous Chicken, in Austin Downtown. A quanto pare ci sono moltissimi ristoranti di BBQ a Austin, tra cui il famoso Franklin Barbecue, per il quale bisogna fare una coda di almeno 3 ore. Ogni ristorante ha un modo diverso di condire e cuocere la carne. Abbiamo trovato la carne di Salt Lick BBQ un po’ troppo dolciastra per essere onesti, però il locale è molto caratteristico e il personale molto amichevole. Consigliamo di assaggiare il petto di tacchino affumicato, il mio tipo di carne preferito tra quelle che abbiamo ordinato! Il pollo di Gus’ World Famous Chicken era favoloso invece, servito con contorno di Mac and Cheese, insalata di cavolo e fagioli.

We have also tried the Texan cuisine, but we are aiming at eating out only once a week as the local specialities are not exactly super healthy. We have tried BBQ at the renowned Salt Lick BBQ, south of Austin, and the fried chicken at Gus’ World Famous Chicken, in Austin Downtown. Apparently there are many BBQ restaurants in Austin, and the most famous one is Franklin Barbecue, where you have to queue for around 3 hours. Every restaurant has its own way of seasoning and cooking the meat. Salt Lick BBQ is also very famous in Austin, however both me and Antonio think the meat was a little bit too sweet for our taste. The staff however is really friendly and the restaurant is pretty unique. If you have the chance to eat at Salt Lick BBQ, make sure to try the smoked turkey breast – this was definitely my favourite meat from the ones we ordered. Gus’ World Famous Chicken‘s Chicken was delicious, and was served with Mac and Cheese, coleslaw and beans.
