SXSW 2018 – Austin capitale della creatività (part I)

Ogni primavera, ci sono un paio di settimane in cui Austin diventa il luogo di ritrovo delle più importanti personalità creative provenienti da tutto il mondo. La città accoglie una media di 80.000 persone per il festival musicale e cinematografico South by Southwest (abbreviato SXSW).

Il centro città si trasforma completamente rispetto al resto dell’anno, ed è il palcoscenico di conferenze, seminari, concerti, film premiere, eventi promozionali, feste e incontri di networking professionali. Quest’anno abbiamo avuto la fortuna di trovarci a Austin proprio durante SXSW, che è iniziato Venerdì 9 e si concluderà Sabato 17 Marzo.

I biglietti per partecipare a tutti gli eventi si dividono in varie categorie, quindi ad esempio si può acquistare il film badge o l’interactive badge, che costano ognuno $1325, oppure il platinum badge, che permette l’accesso prioritario a tutti gli eventi, che costa $1650. Per chi come noi non vuole spendere una fortuna ma non vuole perdersi l’occasione di sperimentare l’atmosfera del SXSW, ci sono moltissimi eventi gratuiti.

Every spring, the most brilliant creative personalities in the world get together in Austin for a couple of weeks. The city of Austin welcomes around 80.000 people for the music and film festival South by Southwest (in short, SXSW). The city center completely changes if compared to the rest of the year, and there’s a lot happening: workshops, conferences, film premieres, promotional events, parties and networking events for professionals. We were lucky enough to be in Austin this year during SXSW, which started on Friday 9th March and will continue until Saturday 17th March. 

The passes to attend all events are divided in different categories, so for example you can get the film badge or the interactive badge for $1325, or the platinum badge, which grants priority access to all events, for $1650. For people like us, who don’t want to spend a fortune, but still want to experience SXSW, there are a tons of free events.

Sabato 10 Marzo io e Antonio abbiamo partecipato ai seminari gratuiti organizzati da General Assembly su materie tech come UX Design, JavaScript (Antonio) e Visual Design (io) al Palmer Event Center, un bel centro conferenze dentro Zilker Park. Entrambi i seminari sono stati molto interessanti, specialmente quello su User Experience, che è qualcosa che mi affascina molto di recente.

On Saturday 10th March, me and Antonio attended the free workshops organised by  General Assembly on topics like UX Design, JavaScript (Antonio) and Visual Design (me). These were held at Palmer Event Center, a very nice conference venue in Zilker Park, one of hte biggest parks of the city. Both workshops were very interesting, especially the one on User Experience, which I am looking into at the moment.

Dopo pranzo abbiamo deciso di fuggire al parco per goderci i 31° record di Sabato. Abbiamo camminato lungo il fiume e poi abbiamo visitato la Austin Public Library, che è stata inaugurata di recente. La biblioteca ha 5 piani, un sacco di spazi per leggere e lavorare, e addirittura una terrazza con divanetti in cui ci si può fermare a leggere.

After lunch, we decided to go to the park to enjoy the sun and the 31°. We had a nice walk along the river and visited Austin Public Library, which has been opened recently. The library has 5 floors, has lots of amazing study rooms and meeting rooms, and a big terrace where you can hang out and read.

E per concludere la giornata, una buona birra a Rainey Street non poteva mancare! Rainey Street è uno dei nostri posti preferiti qui a Austin: si tratta di una strada pedonale in cui delle case tipiche americane (sì, parlo proprio di quelle con le verande in legno che appaiono in tutti i film) sono state riconvertite e trasformate in bar.

Per SXSW, molti dei bar hanno ospitato eventi in partnership con grandi brand, come Pinterest, Buzzfeed, Hulu. Noi abbiamo optato per l’evento gratuito di Banger’s,”Nerdist House”, dove c’era musica dal vivo e una selezione di 100 craft beers.

After our walk, we went to grab a beer at one of our favourite places in Austin, Rainey Street. This is a residential street with houses that have been turned into bars/restaurants. Each of the bars has its own specific vibe and style, and it is awesome just to walk and see what’s going on in each one of them. 

For SXSW, many of these bars have partnered up with brands such as Pinterest, Buzzfeed, Hulu and had different events going on (some free but the majority of them only available with one of the SXSW passes). We decided to have a craft beer at Banger’s, which was hosting an event called “Nerdist House” that involved pinballs and live music.
