Il primo dell’anno a Tokyo

Il primo dell’anno in genere è un giorno dedicato a riprendersi dalle grandi mangiate e bevute del 31 Dicembre… ma per noi quest’anno è andata diversamente! Come sapete, siamo arrivati a Tokyo nel pomeriggio del 31 Dicembre e abbiamo trascorso la mezzanotte a Shibuya, dove la maggior parte dei partecipanti erano stranieri.

We used to spend January 1st in hangover, trying to recover from all the food and the drinks of the previous day… but not this year! As you already know, we arrived to Tokyo in the afternoon of December 31st and we went to Shibuya for the countdown, where we have to admit the largest part of the crowd was not Japanese.

Mentre noi eravamo a brindare in piazza, molti giapponesi erano invece in pellegrinaggio ai santuari per l’Hatsumōde, la prima visita dell’anno. Come anche da noi, il primo dell’anno è importante per la simbologia del nuovo inizio, e per questo motivo ci sono molti rituali da rispettare a Capodanno. Oltre all’Hatsumōde, che in genere accade il primo minuto del primo dell’anno, i giapponesi si svegliano presto per guardare la prima alba, escono per effettuare i primi acquisti dell’anno e preparano dei pasti speciali per iniziare l’anno con il piede giusto.

In fact, while we were celebrating in Shibuya, the majority of Japanese were on their way to the shrine for the Hatsumōde, the first visit of the year. Similarly to many other cultures, the first day of the year is very important in Japan as it’s a new beginning, and it involves many rituals. Additionally to Hatsumōde, which is usually done from midnight of the 1st January, in Japan many people wake up early to see the first dawn, eat a special meal for the first day of the year. Even shops organise a special sale and put together some special merchandise to start the New Year.

Noi abbiamo scelto di fare un giro ad Harajuku e Omotesando, due delle vie più famose per lo shopping a Tokyo, per immergerci in questa frenetica atmosfera.

We decided to take a stroll in Harajuku and Omotesando, two of the most famous shopping areas of the city, to enjoy this peculiar atmosphere.

Una particolarità dello shopping del primo dell’anno sono le fukubukuro, ovvero le Lucky Bag. Quasi tutti i negozi ne offrono una, e si tratta di una busta a sorpresa con prodotti venduti da quel particolare negozio, ad un prezzo variabile tra i 15 e i 300 euro. Per fare un esempio, leggevo delle fukubukuro della Apple, in cui si trovavano addirittura iPad e MacBook, pagando all’incirca $300. Ovviamente ci sono le borse fortunate e quelle più sfortunate, ma abbiamo voluto provare anche noi ad acquistare una fukubukuro. Chi mi conosce non sarà sorpreso dalla scelta, ma ho optato per quella della Disney, che aveva uno stand ad Harajuku.

One of the most interesting items to buy in the first week of the year is the fukubukuro, Lucky Bags. Almost all shops have one displayed outside, and it’s some sort of a mystery bag, which costs between 10 and 300 euros. For example, I was reading about the Apple store fukubukuro, and some people found iPads and MacBooks for a price of $300. Of course there are lucky and unlucky bag, and we wanted to try the thrill of getting a fukubukuro ourselves. I went for the Disney lucky bag (of course!), which we bought in Harajuku.

Continuando con le tradizioni del Capodanno giapponese, abbiamo provato il pasto tipico del primo dell’anno, Osechi-ryōri. Essendo in zona Harajuku, abbiamo scelto di mangiare a Omotesando, da Kyo-Oyasai-bar.

We also had the traditional dish of the Japanese New Year, Osechi-ryōri, in Omotesando, at Kyo-Oyasai-bar.

Dopo un buon pranzo, all’alba delle 4, ci dirigiamo verso il Meiji-jingu per fare anche noi il nostro bell’Hatsumode. Purtroppo però, vista la folla, abbiamo deciso di rimandare la visita ad un altro giorno…

After a nice meal (we still don’t know exactly what we ate), we tried to visit the Meiji-jingu for our Hatsumode. However, because of the massive crowd visiting the shrine, we decided to visit the Meiji-jingu another day…
