Scoprire Tokyo risolvendo puzzle: Tokyo underground mysteries 2018

Questo weekend abbiamo partecipato ad un’attività un po’ insolita: l’annuale caccia al tesoro a bordo della metropolitana di Tokyo. Ogni anno tra Ottobre e Gennaio, la compagnia di trasporti Tokyo Metro organizza “The underground mysteries”, una caccia al tesoro durante la quale i partecipanti devono risolvere quiz e puzzle che li porteranno in varie stazioni lungo la metro per completare il gioco. È una bella iniziativa che vi farà guardare la città sotto una luce diversa.

This weekend we took part in a very unique game: the Tokyo Metro underground mysteries. Every year since 2017, between October and January, the Tokyo Metro company organises a puzzle scavenger hunt across the subway lines. The partecipants travel across Tokyo while finding clues in real life and solving puzzles that lead them to various destinations to complete the game. It’s a great way to view the city in a different light.

Come partecipare / How to join the game

Per partecipare alla caccia al tesoro bisogna acquistare l’apposito kit, che è disponibile in giapponese o in inglese nelle stazioni di Ueno, Tokyo, Shinjuku e Kita-Senju. Il kit costa 2200 yen (circa €18) e include un pass giornaliero per la metro, la guida del giocatore e tutti gli indizi necessari per completare il gioco. Si può partecipare da soli, in coppia, con degli amici o con la famiglia. Non tutti i partecipanti devono necessariamente acquistare un kit, ma consigliamo a tutti i giocatori di comprare un pass giornaliero per la metro, che costa 600 yen (€5) e dura 24 ore dal primo utilizzo.

You will need to purchase a game kit to join the game. The game kits are available in both Japanese and English, and they are sold at the train stations of Ueno, Tokyo, Shinjuku and Kita-Senju. The price for a single kit is 2200 yen (£17) and it includes a daily metro pass, the guidebook and all the clues to complete the game. You can join the game by yourself, in a couple, with friends or with your family. You can share the game kit with the other participants, however we recommend that everyone buys a daily metro pass, which costs 600 yen (£4.5) and is valid for 24 hours from the first travel. 

Consigli utili / Useful information

Non vi sveleremo nulla del gioco in sè perché vi rovineremmo la sorpresa, ma abbiamo una serie di consigli utili per il vostro gameplay:

• Trovate un luogo in cui sedervi e risolvere i primi enigmi proposti dal gioco: serviranno per capire in che stazioni dirigervi e hanno bisogno di un po’ di tempo per essere risolti.
• Se siete bloccati con degli enigmi in particolare, potrete trovare degli indizi sul sito indicato nel kit. Sono disponibili una serie di indizi per enigma, che vi avvicineranno progressivamente alla soluzione ma non la sveleranno completamente.
• Godetevi l’esplorazione dei quartieri in cui vi porterà il gioco, ma non dimenticatevi che ci sono una serie di missioni da portare a termine per completarlo.
• Indossate scarpe comode! Nonostante la maggior parte dei viaggi tra stazioni avvengono in metro, ci sono delle attività da svolgere e puzzle da risolvere all’esterno.

We won’t give anything related to the game itself away, as it would spoil the surprise, but we have some recommendations for your gameplay:

• After you buy the game kit, find a place where you can sit down and work on the first puzzles: these will uncover a number of stations you can go to and require a little while to be solved.
• If you are stuck with one of the puzzles, you can use the companion site that is mentioned on the guide. Each puzzle has a series of clues on this website, which progressively help you figure out the answer, while not giving the solution away.
• Enjoy visiting the areas around the stations the game will lead you to, but don’t forget you have a series of missions to complete in order to finish the same.
• Wear comfortable shoes! Even though you will spend the majority of the time traveling between locations using the metro, there will be times where you need to walk in the areas surrounding the stations to look for clues.

La nostra recensione / Our review

Ci siamo divertiti moltissimo durante la giornata e siamo stati veramente sorpresi da alcuni quartieri che abbiamo visitato. Alcuni dei quiz sono veramente geniali e coinvolgenti, e ti portano a notare aspetti del viaggiare in metropolitana a cui non avevi mai prestato attenzione. I nostri puzzle preferiti sono stati quelli che richiedevano l’interazione con la città, come ad esempio riconoscere degli indizi presenti nella guida nel paesaggio urbano.

Uno dei lati negativi del gioco sono alcune delle istruzioni in inglese, che a volte sono visibilmente traduzioni dal giapponese e quindi poco chiare. Gli indizi sul sito che accompagna il gioco ci hanno aiutato in questo caso, ma al momento è stato molto frustrante non riuscire a capire cosa le istruzioni chiedessero e quindi non riuscire a risolvere gli enigmi.

We really enjoyed our day spent solving puzzles and exploring new areas of Tokyo we’d never been before. Some of the puzzles are really clever and engaging, and they make you notice some things you didn’t notice before, especially with regards to the subway system. Our favourite puzzles were the ones that involved interacting with the city, like for example locating what was pictured on the guidebook in the real world. 

One of the things that we didn’t like about the game were some of the instructions, which were not very clearly translated in English and made us struggle to find a solution to the puzzle. We were in these occasions grateful for the companion website, which helped shed some light on what we needed to do with those particular puzzles.
