Il Chihuly Garden and Glass è uno di quei musei che ti lascia a bocca aperta. Ogni volta che si varca la soglia del padiglione successivo, si viene travolti dai colori brillanti e dalle forme stravaganti delle opere create da quest’artista del vetro.
Prima di arrivare a Seattle non avevo mai sentito parlare di Dale Chihuly, originario di Tacoma, uno dei distretti di Seattle. E’ uno dei più noti artisti vetrari al mondo e le sue opere sono state esposte nei canali di Venezia, ai Kew Gardens di Londra, nella torre di David di Gerusalemme e nei giardini botanici di New York. Chihuly Garden and Glass is one of those museums that amazes you. Every time you step into a new room you are wowed by the bright colours and the different shapes of this glass artist’s artwork.
Before getting to Seattle, I had never heard of Dale Chihuly, born in Tacoma, one of the districts of Seattle. He’s one of the most famous glass artists in the world and his artwork has been displayed in the canals of Venice, at Kew Gardens in London, in the Citadel Tower of David Museum in Jerusalem and in the botanic gardens of New York. Il Chihuly Garden and Glass di Seattle è una celebrazione dell’artista e mostra sia le sue opere che alcuni dei suoi oggetti personali, come ad esempio la sua collezione di trapunte indiane o di orologi. Le opere in mostra a Seattle sono veramente mozzafiato e posso dirvi da adesso che le foto non riescono a fargli giustizia. Se siete a Seattle, dedicate un paio di ore a questa esibizione perché meritano di essere viste dal vivo. Queste sono state le mie sale preferite:
The Seattle Chihuly Garden and Glass is a celebration of this artist, and it showcases the artworks and some items of his personal collection, such as his Pendleton wool blankets or his clocks. The artwork showcased in Seattle is really breathtaking and I can honestly say pictures don’t do them justice. If you are in Seattle, I recommend to spend a couple of hours in this museum. These have been my favourite rooms:
Glasshouse
La serra ospita il pezzo forte del museo: una scultura composta da fiori sui toni del giallo e dell’arancione, sospesa in aria e lunga 30 metri. Dalla glasshouse si riesce anche a vedere lo Space Needle, il simbolo di Seattle, che si trova proprio accanto al museo. Si può poi anche accedere al giardino, in cui si trovano moltissime altre sculture di vetro che si integrano nel paesaggio naturale e acquistano vitalità. Peccato per la pioggia, che mi ha fatto affrettare nei giardini.
The glasshouse is home to the centrepiece of the collection: a 30 meters long suspended glass sculpture with orange and yellow flowers. You can also see the Space Needle, the symbol of Seattle, from the glasshouse, as this is just next to the museum. You can access the garden from the glasshouse, where lots more artwork is placed strategically so that it integrates with the natural landscape. It was raining a lot when I visited the gardens, so I couldn’t spend lots of time there.
Ikebana & Float Boat
Due barche piene di oggetti di vetro: un’idea molto semplice che gli è venuta durante un viaggio in Finlandia. Per testare la resistenza agli urti del vetro, Chihuly aveva lanciato alcune sfere in acqua da un ponte e poi aveva chiesto a dei ragazzini in barca a remi di recuperarle e riportargliele. Vedere le barchette di legno colme di colori l’ha ispirato a realizzare quest’opera.
Two boats filled with glass objects: a very simple idea that Chihuly had during a trip to Finland. He was throwing some glass baubles in the river from a bridge to see if they would break. There were some teenagers in the river with their small boats and he asked them to pick the baubles up for him. He got inspired for this artwork when he saw the vibrant colours on the wooden boats.
Millefiori
Millefiori è un grandissimo giardino di vetro, che prende ispirazione dal giardino della mamma di Chihuly. Entrando nella sala ci si trova davanti a questo insieme di forme e colori di grande impatto e curato nei minimi dettagli.
Millefiori is a glass garden, which is inspired by Chihuly’s mother’s garden. The sight of this big garden after entering the room is amazing, and all of the pieces fit together creating a lifelike garden.
Corridoio persiano
Il corridoio persiano ha dei colori stupendi e centinaia di oggetti che creano un gioco di luci in tutta la stanza. E’ uno sfondo molto particolare per un selfie 😎

Sealife Room
Qui troneggia la struttura blu e azzurra che arriva fino al soffitto e arricchita da stelle marine e conchiglie. Sulle pareti sono appesi gli schizzi che Chihuly realizza prima di assemblare i diversi pezzi di vetro e delle opere più piccole raffiguranti polipi, tartarughe di mare e altre creature marine.
The main focus of the room is the blue and light blue sculpture that goes all the way up to the ceiling and has some starfish and shellfish attached to it. Chihuly’s drawings are on the walls of the room, where you can also find some more sculptures of octopuses and sea turtles.
