Tokyo è stata una delle città che ha lanciato la moda dei Cat Cafe, locali in cui si può gustare un tè caldo o leggere un libro in compagnia dei gatti. Si tratta di ambienti progettati mettendo le esigenze degli animali al primo posto, che ospitano clienti umani che per rilassarsi vogliono passare del tempo in compagnia dei gatti.
Tokyo non si è fermata però ai Cat Cafe. Ci sono altri tipi di bar con animali: i cafe con i porcospini, quelli con i coniglietti e gli Owl Cafe, che ospitano gufi e civette. Insieme al nostro amico Jesus, abbiamo deciso di visitare l’Owlcafe del quartiere di Akihabara: Akiba Fukurou.
Additionally to cat cafes, Tokyo has all sorts of animal cafes. There are hedgehog cafes, bunnies cafes and owl cafes. Together with our friend Jesus, we visited the Owl Cafe in Akihabara: Akiba Fukurou.
Tokyo is one of the city where Cat Cafes, where you can enjoy a drink in the company of cats, became extremely popular. These are shops designed to accommodate the cats’ needs and where humans are only guests looking for a place to relax.
Eravamo già stati in un Cat Cafe a Londra (visitato ben più di una volta), e in questo tipo di locali si ha l’impressione che gli animali si comportino un po’ più “naturalmente” che nell’Owl Cafe. I gatti sono abituati a vivere in ambienti chiusi, mentre ci è sembrato un po’ strano vedere 35 gufi di varie dimensioni in un bilocale. Il locale è veramente molto piccolo, formato da due stanze e con una ventina di posti a sedere. Lungo le pareti ad altezze diverse sono collocati dei trespoli in cui riposano i gufi che vivono nel cafe. Appena arrivati, i due gestori del locale spiegano come comportarsi: niente movimenti bruschi, cercare di parlare a bassa voce e avvicinarsi molto lentamente per accarezzare gli animali. Diversamente dal Cat Cafe, non c’era cibo disponibile all’Owl Cafe.
We already visited the Cat Cafe in Shoreditch in London, so we are used to this type of cafe. However, the owl cafe seems a bit more unnatural if compared to a cat cafe. Cats are used to staying indoors, while it felt very strange to see 35 owls (big and small) in a tiny shop. The Owl Cafe is made of two rooms that can host around 20 guests. Along the walls, at different heights, there are perches where the owls are resting. As soon as you get into the cafe, the two owl carers explain how to behave: no sudden movements, a low tone of voice when speaking and getting your finger on the head of the owls very slowly if you want to pet them. Differently from the cat cafe we have visited, there was no food available at the owl cafe.
Ci sono delle schede disponibili con una descrizione di tutti i gufi e della loro origine e personalità, e ciascun cliente può scegliere che gufo accarezzare e farsi delicatamente mettere su un braccio, con un limite di due gufi a testa. Io e Antonio non ci sentivamo molto a nostro agio quindi abbiamo preferito osservare i gufi da lontano e scattare tantissime foto.
E’ un ambiente molto rilassante, con musica di Mozart in sottofondo, e si vede che i gestori del locale mettono le esigenze degli animali al primo posto. Sul sito del cafe c’è un video che spiega la filosofia a cui si ispirano e come la compagnia dei gufi aiuti i bambini a relazionarsi con rispetto agli animali e gli adulti a rilassarsi dopo una stressante giornata di lavoro.
Recensione: L’Owl Cafe è un’esperienza insolita da provare almeno una volta, ma devo ammettere che essere circondata dai gufi non ha avuto l’effetto rilassante che il sito pubblicizza.
Each of the owls has a cute name and a page in the handbook with a description of their origin and their personality. You can choose which one of the owls you want to pet and which one to hold on your arm, with a limit of 2 owls per person. Me and Antonio didn’t feel like having an owl on our arm (or head) so we just observed them and took pictures.
The atmosphere is very relaxing and there is Mozart music playing in the background, and you can notice that the owl carers put the animal’s needs in front of the guests’ ones. On the website of the cafe there is a short video that explains the philosophy behind the cafe, and it mentions that the company of owls teaches kids how to respect animals and allows adults to relax after a stressful day.
Final impressions: visiting an owl cafe is an unusual experience that we recommend trying, however we didn’t feel that relaxed while surrounded by the owls.
