Se avete in programma di visitare Kyoto, avrete sicuramente già aggiunto Arashiyama alle tappe del vostro viaggio. Questo distretto della città, proprio ai piedi delle omonime montagne, è famoso per la sua foresta di bambù, una meraviglia della natura così diversa da ciò che siamo abituati a vedere nel nostro paese.
If you are planning on visiting Kyoto, chances are you already have Arashiyama down as one of the must see areas of the city. This district, which runs along the base of the Arashiyama mountains, is known for its bamboo grove, which is a natural sight so different from what we are used to.
Oltre alla foresta di bambù, la zona di Arashiyama offre molto altro da vedere. Tra i numerosi templi che sorgono in questo quartiere, uno da non perdere è il tempio zen Tenryū-ji, proprio all’ingresso della foresta. È famoso per essere il tempio principale della scuola Rinzai Zen e per il suo magnifico giardino zen, risalente al quattordicesimo secolo. C’è tutta una filosofia alla base del design dei giardini zen e nel caso del giardino del Tenryū-ji ci troviamo di fronte a un esempio di shakkei, paesaggio in prestito. Le montagne che circondano uno dei lati del tempio sono perfettamente incorporate all’interno della composizione del giardino, come se disposte su un secondo livello rispetto allo stagno. Il Tenryū-ji è patrimonio dell’umanità dell’UNESCO.
There are many more sites to visit in this area. Amongst the many temples that surround the station area, we recommend the zen temple Tenryū-ji, just before the entrance of the bamboo grove. Why should you visit this temple? Because it’s the head temple of the Rinzai Zen school and because of its magnificent 14-century Zen garden. The artificial landscape of the garden matches the natural landscape of the mountains in the distance, as if they are also part of the garden. This is a perfect example of what is called shakkei, ‘borrowed landscape’. Tenryū-jin is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
È particolarmente rigoglioso durante la stagione dei ciliegi. Noi l’abbiamo visitato prima del pieno della fioritura, quindi i ciliegi sono ancora un po’ timidi, ma se cercate qualche foto su internet potete anche vedere sprazzi di rosa sulle montagne circostanti.
The garden is particularly beautiful during the Autumn or the sakura season. We visited it a while before the full bloom of sakura trees, so the pink is still not as predominant in some pictures I found online while researching the temple. The mountains as well have spots of pink here and there during the full bloom.
Si possono visitare varie aree del tempio, noi abbiamo scelto di fare solo una passeggiata nel giardino zen per 500 yen, ma con altri 500 yen si può vedere l’Hōjō (la sala principale), che offre scorci mozzafiato del giardino e la sala delle cerimonie del tempio, sul cui soffitto è raffigurato un drago avvolto tra le nuvole, il cui sguardo sembra seguire lo spettatore da qualsiasi angolazione lo si stia osservando.
You can choose to only visit the garden for 500 yen, as we did, or to get another ticket for another 500 yen to visit the Hōjō (main hall), which offers amazing viewpoints of the garden, and the Dharma Hall, where you can admire a painting of a cloud dragon on the ceiling.
Una volta visitato il tempio, potete scegliere di uscire da dove siete entrati (uscita Nord) per addentrarvi nella foresta di bambù, oppure potete uscire dall’uscita del giardino, dove si trova anche l’ufficio in cui ricevere il sigillo del tempio per il vostro goshuincho. Da qui, svoltando a destra, potete arrivare al fiume Hozu.
When you finish your visit to the temple, you can either decide to exit from where you entered (North Exit) and continue your walk within the bamboo grove, or you can take the Garden Exit, where you will find the seal office, to receive the seal for your goshuincho book. From there, take a right and the road will lead you to the Hozu river.
Dalle rive del fiume Hozo partono delle mini-crociere da un paio di ore che collegano Arashiyama a Tanba-Kameoka. Si tratta di qualcosa che vorrò sicuramente fare durante il mio prossimo viaggio a Kyoto!
From here you can take on a 2 hours river cruise to Tanba-Kameoka. This is something I will definitely want to try on my next trip to Kyoto!
